Description

These Astrobin Debut Objects are a pair of spiral galaxies located in the constellation of Bootes at a declination of +41 degrees.  The galaxies are not in close proximity to each other and are not interacting.

NGC 6003 is the lenticular galaxy at top right.  This magnitude 14 galaxy is located 200 million light years away and is 50,000 light years in diameter.

NGC 6004 is the pretty barred spiral at lower left, located much closer at 130 million light years away.  It is about 30 degrees from face-on from our view perspective.  The magnitude 13 galaxy is 1.5 arc-minutes wide, which corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.  I like the color contrast of the disk, with the yellow core and the blue arms and star clouds.  Notice how the 2 bar segments, above and below the core, are not quite aligned.

My favorite part of the image is all of the small galaxies trying to take the spotlight away from NGC 6004.  I count 14 small galaxies within 2 diameters of NGC 6004.

Finally, take a look at LEDA 1578443, the small galaxy just left of top center.  The disk is normal on the lower right half and wildly distorted on the upper left half.
